Manish Porwal, CEO, Percept Talent Management, thinks that the best thing about taking on a celebrity couple is that the brand value is already established. He says, "The idea is to give people the feeling that they are getting a peek into the couple's private life." Porwal feels if married couple Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan came together for an ad, they could give 'Saifeena' a run for their money. He says, "Abhishek and Aishwarya are elusive; many brands would like to cash in on their equation." There is one hitch in hiring the jodis though. If and when they break up, the brand image takes a beating. Porwal says brand managers always consider only steady couples like say Ajay Devgan and Kajol when there is a serious product. But for products like candies or soft drinks, they are willing to take the risk with a current romancing couple. KS Chakravarthy, national creative director, Draft FCB Ulka says, "Ajay and Kajol were the hot favourite when they endorsed a washing machine a few years back. They were chosen because they have a more believable relationship. Saif and Kareena are yet to achieve that."

Even though Dutt's manager Dharam Oberoi says the actor will join the schedule from May 15, sources say the actual date may be much later since election results will be announced on May 16. Dutt also wrapped up a song for the film Chatur Singh Two Star in a day-and-a-half at Mehboob Studios earlier this week because he had to fly to Lucknow soon after. Says a unit hand, "Dutt saab didn't arrive for the first two days. Then he requested director Ashok Chandok to wrap up the song in three shifts." Vinod Rathod, who has a lot of Sanjay Dutt songs to his credit, will definitely go to campaign for the star in Lucknow. Rumour has it that even Arshad 'Circuit' Warsi has been approached to lend support to Munnabhai.

Well, yes and no. Amitabh will be playing the role of a politician in Prakash Jha’s new movie Aarakhshan. The film is set against the employment quota system introduced in 1979 aimed at promoting equality amongst the different classes in India. The film will be shot in Bhopal. “After shooting my latest film Rajneeti in Bhopal, I have fallen in love with the city,” Prakash confided, “I have persuaded Mr Bachchan to shoot here — it’s the best place to shoot Aarakshan.”

Take the case of West End in Sadar Bazaar. Manager M.L. Mehta says this 654-seater incurs loss whenever it tries to screen a new release. “But an old Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan or Sunil Shetty starrer fetches the expected revenue and there’s hardly a seat empty when we screen Sholay on a holiday,” he adds. Excelsior’s manger K.N. Bhatnagar agrees. With 500 seats, Excelsior at Hauz Qazi was once a rage among the audience. Way back in 1938 when the hall was inaugurated, it was a popular weekend destination and in the 60s, films like Do Kaliyan celebrated their silver jubilee in this hall. Today, it doesn’t screen a particular movie for more than two-three days. “We screen only old films and each film is put up for a maximum period of three days. So, today it might be Sunny Deol’s Champion, tomorrow Ajay Devgan’s Dilwale and the day after Dharmendra’s Burning Train. There’s generally 35 per cent occupancy. That’s okay, after all, most cinema halls do not have more than 40 per cent of their seats filled up for a majority of their shows,” says Bhatnagar. With tickets going up to Rs 20 for the balcony and at least three films in a week, these single screens manage to pull crowd. However, the story is different in the case of Shahdra’s Supreme Cinema. With 1,189 seats, it is the second largest standalone cinema hall in Delhi. Manager O.P. Sharma says that till two years ago they used to screen only old Hindi movies, including classics. “But the cable operators made a dent into our business by showing the same movie in the same week. Now, we have applied to the Delhi Development Authority to convert Supreme into a multiplex. That would be better than selling it off,” he says and cites the fates of cinema halls in the old city to explain the need to turn into a multiplex. Kumar in Chandni Chowk has turned into a McDonald outlet, Minerva into an auto-parts shop, New Amar in Chawri Bazaar and Vivek in Patel Nagar have given way to Metro stations. Sharma would like Supreme to continue as a movie hall. But at a time when Moser Baer VCDs of old Hindi films are available at Rs 28, why would someone like to spend Rs 20 for a balcony ticket at Imperial in Paharganj? Sanjay Mehta of Bobby Arts, the largest distributor of films in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, says, “Previously, these used to repeat-run halls. After a particular movie had completed 12-15 weeks in Sheila, it used to be screened at Imperial as a repeat-run. Nowadays, there are hardly any movies that complete 15 weeks at a stretch. The repeat-run halls could not afford buying new movies and hence, started screening old movies. During Id, the demand is for Rishi-Kapoor starrer Laila Majnu and during Holi it is Dharmendra’s Phagun, “he says. “While action movies top the chart, these halls refrain from screening adults only movie as they still cater to the family audience—people for whom multiplex ticket is unaffordable and those who do not have a DVD player at home, ” he adds. Survival is a struggle, Mehta says. But these single screens are putting up a tough fight.

But he found a novel way of doing it travelling by ferry right from his doorstep to the shoot at the Madh jetty where the shoot was going on. Says a source from the sets, "Fardeen is a really devoted son. Last week, when he was shooting at Madh island, the first couple of days were really difficult. He'd come by car from Juhu to Madh (a 90-minute drive) for the film, drive down home in the evening, get changed and leave for the hospital (which is in the city). As a result of the constant travelling and stress because of his father being very unwell, Fardeen lost a lot of weight." But after two days, Fardeen found out that if he paid the ferries extra money (Rs 500) they'd pick him up from his home (which is on the beach), drop him at the Madh jetty and in the evening would pick up from the jetty to drop him again right at his home. "Going both ways takes 10 minutes, in this way Fardeen saved more than two hours of traveling." Kumar Mangat, co-producer of All The Best (along with Ajay Devgan), confirms Fardeen's travelling arrangements and adds, "Fardeen is one of the most professional, sincere and hard-working actors I have ever met. Initially, he would drive down for the shoot but after he took the boat he saved a lot of time. He's also a loving and devoted son. He needed to go to the hospital and spend time with his dad at night. Once he reached home in the evening, he would freshen up and leave for the hospital. But Fardeen never once complained or came late for the shoot. By travelling on the ferry, he saved a lot of time. He was doing double duty and yet remained committed to the job."

This month's general election looks set to be no different, with controversy over movie tough guy Sanjay Dutt's candidature, the withdrawal of actor Govinda and a string of other stars vying for a place in parliament. But Bollywood is also getting involved in other ways, in particular by encouraging the 714-million-strong electorate to come out and vote. Actor-producer Aamir Khan has teamed up with Rakeysh Mehra, who directed him in the 2006 hit "Rang De Basanti" to make three one-minute television films appealing to people to "vote for integrity, vote for good people". "The terror attack on Mumbai on 26/11 (November 26) has changed India," said Khan, whose film "Ghajini" became Bollywood's highest-grossing movie of all time earlier this year. "Indians have become more sensitive and expect more from politicians. So, I felt it is necessary for voters to choose the right kind of candidates." Khan, 44, said it was vital for people to know who they were voting for, as concern focuses on serving lawmakers who face criminal charges, including murder and rape, and the role of corruption at the heart of Indian politics. "I am not propagating for any particular party or its ideology. I just want people to select good candidates," he added. Fellow actor Ajay Devgan, who starred in the 2006 hit "Golmaal", also said he would be voting, urging India's politically apathetic middle and upper classes to make their voices heard. "We should own up responsibility when wrong leaders are voted to power, because educated people like us who understand things don't venture out to exercise our vote," he told the Hindustan Times in a recent interview. Like Hollywood -- where former matinee idol Ronald Reagan famously rose to become US president -- Bollywood has seen some notable figures swap the glamour of the silver screen for the cut and thrust of politics. Sunil Dutt, father of Sanjay, was elected in 1984 and served as a minister in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress-led government until the actor's death in 2005. Sinha, the first Bollywood star to become a cabinet minister, said that despite the controversies, film actors could still play an important part in Indian public life. "Actors can attract crowds initially in politics and they are popular too.
